While I am a longtime lover of warm, tropical islands, the surreal and haunting beauty of the Icy white polar regions pulled me magnetically far north and south where I fast developed a fascination with Ice and the Arctic regions.

Despite these climates being polar opposites, I was struck by the similarity of sublime colors that spanned such vastly different worlds and the effect of rising seas on life, no matter the location on the globe.

The vast Greenland ice cap, almost half the size of the United States, and its many elemental moods reached deep inside me and a bridge of emotions arose between myself and these distant worlds where Ice Kingdom reigns supreme.

Tranquil scenes of violet skies and liquid gold, and dazzling displays of turquoise and cerulean streaking thru iridescent white ice were pure delight, especially for one who excitedly awaits the photographer’s magic hour. In the Arctic summer that alchemy can stretch for a quarter of a never-ending day as the midnight Sun rests on that distant line where Sea meets Sky, refusing to set.

Jutting above the frigid waters is only the tip of the iceberg, beneath it azure blues and a shimmering aqua alluringly beckon, enchanting scenes that belie the enormity of scale of what lays below the surface -

and what lies ahead for the planet as the march of time and humanity melt what has been frozen for millenniums and entire islands of Ice return to their liquid form.

After these explorations of several years I’ve come to believe that there is magic within Ice ~ that the complexity of fascinating shapes and colors of Icebergs are not just random, but like most of Nature, are being self created by Ice itself.

And while humanity must face the consequences of its years of promotion of itself over Nature, and take wise actions that face what we have brought upon ourselves, there is also untapped potential, opportunity and wisdom within the vast Ice caps that dominate the top and bottom of our planet.

We must recognize the inherent consciousness of Ice itself. Man is not the primary sentient being on Earth ~ we exist in a complex interconnected system of existence in which all contributes to our collective well-being.

“There is another sky, Ever serene and fair, And there is another sunshine, Though it be darkness there.”

And so, my wish is this:
Treasure the beauty of Earth and its abundance, offer respect and gratitude, be her ally, and feel the mystery and magic of the Ice Kingdom ~ for surely what is locked away in frozen form must have the keys to create a bright & promising future.
